Paramedic

What is a Paramedic?

A paramedic, officially an Emergency Medical Technician-

Paramedic, (EMT-P) is an individual that has successfully

completed, at minimum, a DOH standardized course of

instruction and has demonstrated proficient skills and knowledge

to obtain certification within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The program takes anywhere from 1 to 2 years to complete and

often requires an associates degree. These skills are considered

         advanced life support methods.

What are the duties of an EMT-P?

         • An EMT-P must be able to lift and carry 125 pounds. Together

with another EMT or EMT-P, they could move a 250 patient

without further assistance. Carrying is a major function of the

           job.

         • An EMT-P must provide basic life support care. This includes

bleeding control, immobilization of bones, spinal

           immobilization, patient assessment for both illness and injury;

respiratory emergencies, cardiac emergencies, CPR, and many

other areas of life support the EMT-P may face on any given

           day.

         • An EMT-P also must be able to provide advanced life support

when needed. These advanced skills include, but are not limited

to airway management using intubation or other advanced

airway skills; starting and maintaining IVs, EKG recognition,

use of a cardiac monitor, cardiac pacing, medication

administration, advanced patient assessment, and other

advanced skills as directed by ALS protocols and/or medical

           command.

         • An EMT-P must maintain all required certifications by

attending and participating in continuing education classes as

required by the individual regional EMS offices.

         • An EMT-P must be able to safely drive an ambulance. To do so,

an EMT-P must successfully complete a state registered

           Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC).

What else is expected of an EMT-P at Keystone Quality Transport?

Simply being an EMT-P does not assure a position with our

company. Many of our customers are nursing homes and

hospitals that care for people who are advanced in age and are

unable to completely care for their selves. An EMT-P at

Keystone Quality Transport must demonstrate the professional

qualities of compassion, patience, and understanding for this

very special group of people. An EMT-P at KQT must also

demonstrate leadership among the crews and a willingness to

           help on all tasks assigned.

What are the hours?

Keystone Quality Transport has always tried to be as flexible as

possible with our working staff. We realize that many

employees are attending schools to better their own lives

and we try to work around those schedules. Our employees, as

well, are expected to meet the needs of our customers. It is not

unusual to be asked to stay for an extra run or to take a longer

transport that may require you to be out longer than

anticipated. If you are looking for exact hours or a 9-5 job, this

is not the place to look! But if you are looking for personal

rewards and great job satisfaction, let’s talk!
